How to choose forces and motion apparatus

• Air track length: the Linear Air Track Compact is 1.2 m long and comes with an accessory kit; the Linear Air Track Premium and the Linear Air Track Kit Full Length are both 2 m, and the Premium is described for elastic and inelastic collisions.
• Timing method: the two ticker tape timers mark dots on paper tape (the Ticker Tape Timer runs on 12 V AC, the Economy model on 6 V AC), while the Millisecond Timer gives a digital reading and the Light Gate (Photo Timing Gate) connects to electronic timers through 4 mm sockets.
• Springs: the Extension Spring Set gives five springs of equal length with different spring constants for comparison; the Extension Springs Economy are steel springs with loops at both ends.
• Moments and friction: the Moment of Force Apparatus is self-contained and needs no retort stand. The Inclined Plane and Friction Board is the inclined plane apparatus in the range, set at angles between 24 and 45 degrees, with a metal roller and scale pan.
• Waves: the Wave Machine is a cam-driven demonstrator; the Wave Demonstrator Kit is self-assembled and adds an extension spring, two loaded elastic cords and a teacher's book.

Which forces and motion apparatus can time events electronically?
The Millisecond Timer has a 13 mm digital display and auto-ranges up to 9999 s. The Light Gate (Photo Timing Gate) has two 4 mm output sockets for connection to electronic timers; interrupting its light beam opens the circuit between them.

How long are the linear air tracks?
The Linear Air Track Compact measures 1.2 m and is made from 56 x 56 mm extruded aluminium. The Linear Air Track Premium and the Linear Air Track Kit Full Length are both 2 m long.

Can the Dynamics Trolley Wooden carry extra mass?
Yes. Trolleys can be stacked on their dowel pegs to double or triple the effective mass, or masses can be placed on the flat top. Each trolley has a mass of 870 g and three low-friction wheels.

What spring constants does the Extension Spring Set cover?
The set has five springs of the same length with spring constants of 2.5, 6.0, 10, 15 and 26 N/m. Each spring has an eye at one end and a hook at the other.
